What You Should Consider Before Completing a Volunteer Application

Volunteer Expectations

Oaklawn volunteers are adults (18+) from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. They represent Oaklawn with professionalism and share a commitment to our vision of striving for perfect care—every time.

We value complete and thoughtful applications that clearly reflect your skills and interests. Applicants must independently manage the application process and communicate on their own behalf by phone, email, or in person. Please note that we do not discuss applications or placement details with parents, guardians, or other representatives.

Because of the investment involved in onboarding and training, Oaklawn is best suited for individuals interested in a meaningful, long-term volunteer experience. We are unable to accommodate short-term placements. Volunteering opportunities are not to develop or practice clinical or technical skills nor is it shadowing with a healthcare professional. If you are interested in shadowing, please contact our Human Resources department at (269) 789-8420.

Oaklawn maintains high expectations for attendance and punctuality. Before applying, please consider your ability to consistently fulfill your volunteer commitment, even during busy periods such as increased workloads or school exams. Volunteers are expected to notify their guild chair of any absences. In some roles, volunteers may also be responsible for arranging their own substitute coverage.

Volunteer Requirements

There are certain key requirements that we ask each volunteer to meet in order to volunteer at Oaklawn. These requirements are set in place for your protection as well as for the protection of our patients, visitors, and staff. Each requirement must be met before your first day of volunteering.

  • Background check
  • Health screening
    • All volunteers must create a TrackMy Account to verify required immunizations (seasonal flu shot, Hep B, MMR, Varicella, and Tdap). Instructions on how to set up your TrackMy Account can be found here.
    • Annual flu shot clinics are required by all volunteers and provided free of charge at Oaklawn Occupational Medicine.
    • Volunteers must test negative for Tuberculosis (TB)
    • Once your TrackMy account is set up, you must upload an immunization record or other document showing receipt of completed vaccinations or lab test showing immunity (antibody titer testing). If a lab test is needed to show immunity, this can be provided free of charge at Oaklawn Occupational Medicine. Once your TrackMy account is set up, we will let you know if any vaccines or boosters are needed. If you need any vaccinations to meet our requirements, they are also provided free of charge.
  • Training & Orientation
    • All volunteers must complete the required orientation presentation and sign an acknowledgment confirming they have read and understand all orientation materials provided.
    • Annual refresher and acknowledgement: Review of materials is to be completed by volunteers annually. You will receive an email that will instruct you when to complete these assessments.
    • Please view the online orientation PowerPoint and training here.
    • Follow up appointments at the hospital campus to review policies, sign acknowledgements, take your photo and obtain your badge, are required of new volunteers.
    • Note: Fingerprinting will be required for any volunteers working in our hospice department. This is scheduled through our human resources department during your follow up appointment.
    • Specific volunteer position training with guild chair and members is required for most positions after orientation is completed.
