Oaklawn welcomes Bassem Saad, M.D., to Outpatient Psychological Services
MARSHALL, Mich. – Bassem Saad, M.D., a psychiatrist, will join Oaklawn Outpatient Psychological Services beginning Monday, Sept. 21.
Saad will provide outpatient psychiatric care for adolescents, adults and older adults. His clinical interests include trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety and mood disorders.
“I try to get to know the person behind the diagnosis,” Saad said. “Every patient has a different story, background, personality, and set of circumstances, so I do not believe psychiatric treatment should look the same for everyone.”
Saad describes his approach to care as integrative and holistic, incorporating medication when appropriate along with psychotherapy and an understanding of patients’ life experiences and relationships.
“Most importantly, I want my patients to feel comfortable being honest with me and to feel that we are working together to find a treatment approach that makes sense for them,” he said.
Saad completed his psychiatry residency at Corewell Health, with training in inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, community psychiatry and emergency psychiatric care. He earned his medical degree from Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt.
Prior to his residency, Saad spent four years conducting clinical research at Wayne State University, including research examining the effects of war, trauma and resettlement on Syrian and Iraqi refugees.
Saad said he was drawn to Oaklawn by the sense of community he found in Marshall.
“The town reminded me of my own hometown and the feeling of being part of a close-knit community where people know and look out for each other,” Saad said. “I really value that sense of connection, and I wanted to work somewhere where I could become part of the community rather than simply come to work each day.”
