After the hectic Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a global initiative that encourages people to donate their time and money to charitable causes.
On Dec. 3, Oaklawn participated in Giving Tuesday by asking for donations for Oaklawn Hospice with a goal of $15,000.
“Oaklawn Hospice provides the best possible care to our patients and their families in their final hours,” said Oaklawn Development Manager Cindy Lake. “These wonder workers guide families through the grieving process and offer some peace in a time of heartbreak. The staff of Oaklawn Hospice are once again recipients of a SHP Best Premier Performer family-satisfaction award. This means Oaklawn Hospice is in the top 5% in the nation for family satisfaction.”
Oaklawn Auxiliary stepped up and through the money they had raised throughout the year with their fundraisers and gift shop proceeds, generously gave $10,000.
Nita Main is the chair of the Gift Shop Guild with the Oaklawn Auxiliary, and she said Oaklawn Hospice was there for her and her family when her husband was suffering from ALS.
“I’m very passionate about Oaklawn Hospice,” said Main. “I know that they are needed simply because they were there for me when I needed them. And that’s when I learned to love and appreciate them.”
Last year the Auxiliary was also able to give $10,000 to Oaklawn Hospice. In 2022, the Auxiliary gave $20,000 towards respirators.
“Oaklawn Hospice is near and dear to my heart, and I hope they are there forever for anyone who needs it,” said Main.
Overall, Oaklawn exceeded its Giving Tuesday goal.
“This is because of our generous community!” said Lake. “Thank you to all who gave. Together, we made the decision to support Oaklawn Hospice. We made the decision to be there for someone in their final days and we made a difference. Your participation in Giving Tuesday is greatly appreciated, our Oaklawn Family thanks you for your generosity.”
