Kim Applebey, FNP-BC, joins Oaklawn Medical Group Ear, Nose & Throat

Kim Applebey, FNP-BC, is seeing patients at Oaklawn Medical Group’s Ear, Nose & Throat office, located in the Wright Medical Building, 215 E. Mansion St. Suite 2D in Marshall. The office can be reached at 269-789-0015.

Applebey previously worked in Oaklawn Medical Group’s Beadle Lake office and in Oaklawn’s Express Care locations seeing a wide range of patients compared to the more specialized area she is in now.

“I already had a good basis treating general ear, nose and throat (ENT) at the other locations,” said Applebey. “But now, it’s learning about the intricacies of Otolaryngology (a medical specialty focusing on ears, nose and throat) and different kinds of treatments. So, for example, with sinusitis, if  treatment isn’t working at the primary care office, then they’ll send the patient to the Ear, Nose & Throat office and we’ll handle the next steps.”

Understandably, Applebey added that there has been a learning curve in her new role as care and treatment is now more focused.

“I’m learning more intricate pieces and parts and the treatments that are available,” she said. “It’s all so interesting and I have learned so much. One of the nice things for me is that my background has always been very broad as far as taking care of patients from birth to the elderly. I still get to see that wide spectrum of patients which I have always enjoyed.”

Applebey grew up in Charlotte, Mich. and attended Western Michigan University’s Bronson School of Nursing. She later furthered her education at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomana, Calif.

She noted she was inspired by her grandmother to become a caregiver.

“When I was a child, I remember fondly going to work at the ‘old folks’ home’ with my grandmother,” said Applebey. “Later, after observing an open-heart surgery, my mind was made up; I was going to become a nurse.”

Applebey met her husband of 28 years when he was a paramedic (now a PA-C with Oaklawn) and she was a nurse in the ER.

When not working, Applebey said her favorite hobbies include quilting, camping and travelling to new places.

“My husband and I used to do mission work in Nicaragua, so that is one of my favorite places in the world,” she said. “I’ve been there a dozen times. It kind of feels like home.”

Applebey joined the medical group in 2024 and feels that Oaklawn and the Marshall community have been a good fit for her.

“When we worked in Gaylord, it was very much a small-town hospital and we loved that environment,” she said. “Oaklawn is that small, hometown place that feels kind of like a family. Growing up in Charlotte, I have fond memories of driving through Marshall and looking at all the Christmas lights.”

Applebey said she has already seen several patients in the ENT office that she had seen at her previous locations.

“It’s nice to see them again,” said Applebey. “Some patients knew I was changing locations while others are surprised to see me. They’ll see me, smile and say, ‘What are you doing here?’ and then we’ll have a good laugh.”
