Holly Weaver, AGNP joins Oaklawn Medical Group

Holly Weaver, AGNP-C (board-certified Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner) has joined Oaklawn Medical Group Gastroenterology located in the Wright Medical Building Suite 3A at 215 E. Mansion St. in Marshall. The office can be reached at 269-789-0025.

Weaver has over 20 years’ experience in healthcare. Prior to joining Oaklawn, she was on staff at Senior Partners P.A.C.E. in Albion providing primary, palliative and hospice care for complex and chronically ill and underserved adults.

“When all practitioners go through school, we have to pick a specialty, and I chose adult gerontology because that’s where I always had the most passion,” she said. “I wanted to take care of the elderly because I feel like they are a neglected and undervalued portion of our society, and they really should be celebrated.”

Weaver said she was heavily influenced to go into the medical field thanks to her grandmother, Patsy Voyce who was an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse).

“Just out of high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and she asked me what I thought about nursing,” said Weaver. “I had always heard her stories about being a nurse and I found them fascinating and it kind of fell in line with my personality and where my passions lied. So, I went to work at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek as an aide and I did that while I went to practical nursing school.”

From there, Weaver, who grew up in Union City, earned her Associate’s and became an RN through Kellogg Community College and then went on to get her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees through Spring Arbor University, graduating among the top in her class.

Weaver noted that her grandmother pinned her during her nursing graduation ceremony and added that her grandmother was a big supporter of Oaklawn.

“She loved Oaklawn and supported them in any way she could,” said Weaver. “So, for me to join Oaklawn is kind of a full circle thing.”

Weaver said she likes to think of herself as a coach and counselor when it comes to helping her patients. An example she uses is if they come in with stomach pain.

“We have to try to guide them to understand that, while the pain is important, there are more things that they need to care about, too,” she said. “Why is the pain happening? How can it be prevented? So, there’s a lot of counseling, coaching, treating and diagnosing that goes into it.”

In her spare time, Weaver said she enjoys spending time with her husband Brad and their two children.

“I love camping with my family,” she said. “ I love all animals, but especially dogs. We have two, but they are the size of four dogs.”

Weaver pointed out that she has a soft spot in her heart for farmers.

“My grandfather Jerry just turned 90 and has always been a farmer,” she said. “He owns a little grain mill in East Leroy. My father is a farmer and so are his brothers. I’ve always liked taking care of farmers. They are a unique group of people who work hard for us and deserve to be taken care of, too.”

As she begins a new chapter in her life, Weaver said she is excited to be a part of the Oaklawn team.

“Oaklawn has always been this small, strong place in Marshall that has just been a stable force in our community,” she said. “I feel very proud to be part of the team because of that. I think it’s admirable that they have stayed true to themselves as an organization through all the changes over the decades. It’s really encouraging.”
