Oaklawn announces service line changes and growth initiatives to support long-term stability

MARSHALL, Mich. — Oaklawn is announcing a series of operational changes to strengthen its financial foundation and support the organization’s ability to serve the community well into the future.

As Oaklawn prepares for the start of its new fiscal year on April 1, leadership has completed an extensive budget review. To support long-term stability, Oaklawn will close three service lines while continuing to invest in growth areas.

Service line adjustments
As part of this realignment, Oaklawn will close the following service lines in Marshall:

  • Wound Care Center service line: Anticipated closure in May.
  • Pulmonology service line: Anticipated closure in June. Oaklawn will transition to a tele-ICU model that includes remote physician support and on-site hospitalist coverage for inpatient care.
  • Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology service line: Scheduled to close June 26.

Patients affected by these changes are encouraged to work directly with their care teams and office staff for guidance on next steps and continuity of care.

Operational efficiency
To support these efforts, Oaklawn is implementing administrative cost-saving measures. These include an organization-wide compensation freeze for the fiscal year, with current pay preserved, and the elimination of approximately 50 positions across the organization, 35 of which are already vacant.

Areas of strategic growth
While streamlining certain operations, Oaklawn is focusing resources on expanding services that meet community need, including:

  • Pharmacy services: Expansion of pharmacy operations and the launch of a specialty pharmacy partnership. This initiative will allow Oaklawn to better serve patients who need medications requiring special licensing and will include new delivery services.
  • Endoscopy access: Increased patient access through the addition of Friday procedures.
  • Occupational Medicine program: Continued development and growth of the Occupational Medicine program.

These decisions follow months of work among staff, leadership and the board of directors. By focusing resources on priority services and areas of growth, Oaklawn is taking steps to support long-term stability and continue serving the community.

Additional information and updates will be shared through the Oaklawn website and official social media channels as these transitions progress.

About Oaklawn: Oaklawn was founded in 1925 as a 12-bed hospital in a residential home, funded by a group of visionary philanthropists. Now, 10 decades later, we’ve evolved into a highly regarded regional health care organization, licensed for 77 acute care beds and a 17-bed inpatient psychiatric unit. We’ve continued to be an independently owned not-for-profit hospital, with our main campus residing on the same site as the original hospital, providing facilities, equipment and technology that are usually only found in larger health systems. We enjoy a reputation for advancing medicine and providing compassionate, personal care. Our service area includes Calhoun County and parts of Branch and Eaton counties, with a medical staff of more than 300 providers representing over 55 specialties.
