Oaklawn Hospice Honors Volunteer Quilters for Special Veterans Tribute

Marshall, Mich., November, 10, 2025 — In a heartfelt tribute ahead of Veterans Day and in recognition of National Hospice Month, Oaklawn Hospice proudly recognizes the generosity and patriotism of its volunteer quilting group—especially community member Ron Ducheney, who recently delivered handcrafted quilts dedicated to each branch of the U.S. military.

Ron Ducheney, husband of longtime Oaklawn Hospice volunteer quilter Jo Ducheney, surprised staff and volunteers when he personally delivered multiple themed quilts representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Despite not being a quilter himself, Ron felt deeply compelled to honor veterans receiving hospice care through this meaningful gesture.

“Veterans have done so much for others, I feel this is a small way to give back,” Ron said.

Ron collaborated closely with the Oaklawn Hospice Volunteer Quilting Group, whose members helped support and complete the quilts. The group has long been known for creating keepsake quilts for hospice patients and families, with this latest project serving as a powerful tribute to those who have served our nation.

The Oaklawn Hospice Volunteer Quilting Group includes:

  • Anita Clark
  • Jo Ducheney
  • Ruth Kish
  • Lisa Kirylo
  • Cathy Michealson
  • Joann Saupson
  • Rebecca Shewmaker
  • Betsy Tucker

“These quilts represent compassion, gratitude, and the spirit of service that defines our volunteers,” said Carolle Hicks, Oaklawn Hospice Administrator. “We are incredibly grateful to Ron and our quilting volunteers for honoring veterans in such a personal and meaningful way.”

The quilts will be presented to Oaklawn Hospice patients who are veterans as a symbol of appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
