Taylor Reed, PA-C, has joined Oaklawn Express Care in Marshall (1174 W Michigan Ave), but is also expected to work at the Beckley Road (5352 Beckley Road) location in Battle Creek.
Reed grew up in Southwest Michigan near the Indiana border in Buchanan. She attended Michigan State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology in 2021.
Last year, Reed earned her Master of Science in Medicine, Physician Assistant Studies from Western Michigan University.
Reed is familiar with Oaklawn, having completed several rotations during her clinical year of her master’s program.
“I worked in the ER for about a month, did my family medicine rotation, and also chose urgent care at the Marshall location as one of my electives,” Reed said. “It gave me a great sense of the culture at Oaklawn.”
She found herself drawn to the fast-paced nature of urgent care.
“I really enjoy the acuity — being able to bridge that gap between preventative care in family medicine and life-threatening traumas in ERs. I like providing quick but effective care,” Reed said. “I also love doing procedures, especially suturing, which you see a lot of in urgent care.”
Compared to the emergency department, Reed expects to see non-life-threatening issues that still require prompt attention at Express Care.
“The trauma level is lower than what you’ll experience in the ER, which I prefer,” she noted.
Reed said in the urgent care setting, despite being outside of a traditional primary care office, there is the opportunity to establish relationships with patients.
“People often think you can only form those long-term connections in primary care, but you see frequent patients in urgent care too,” she said. “Parents bring their kids in for things like strep or other acute illness, or patients come back for themselves, so you still develop that trust…It’s important patients still feel heard and cared for when they come in — especially if they can’t get a same-day appointment with their primary care provider.”
She also highlighted the breadth of care offered in urgent care.
“A lot of women’s health is handled here too, like STI screenings, UTIs and other infections. Some patients feel more comfortable doing that outside of their regular doctor’s office and I aim to always make women feel comfortable,” she explained.
She said she is looking forward to this new chapter of her career with Oaklawn.
“It was great to see how team-based the care was — not just among providers, but also with the front desk and admin staff,” said Reed. “Everyone really works together to give patients the best experience, and I saw that across multiple specialties. That consistency was very reassuring.
Outside of work, Reed said she enjoys spending time outdoors.
“I have two dogs – a Rottweiler and a bulldog, so they take up a lot of my free time and I enjoy making sure they stay active,” she said. “I also really enjoy trying new food and exploring different places when I get a chance to travel.”
Reed said that she is excited to be part of the Oaklawn team.
“Absolutely,” she said. “I like being busy, on my feet and helping people — so this is a perfect fit.”
