Oaklawn Physical Rehabilitation services expand at Beadle Lake location

Life is becoming easier for area residents who need close-to-home physical-therapy services – and who want help quickly.

Oaklawn Physical Rehabilitation – Beadle Lake has opened its new office in the Oaklawn Medical Group’s expanded Beadle Lake site at 14231 Beadle Lake Road, Battle Creek.

“We’re furnishing it with the most up-to-date equipment we can offer the patient,” said Tracy Winnie, the new clinical manager. Inquiries may be made and appointments scheduled by calling (269) 704-5180.

The facility also houses physicians’ offices for Eric Ebner, M.D. (obstetrics and gynecology); Stephen Durant, M.D. (internal medicine); and Stephanie Satz, M.D. (family practice).

The Beadle Lake service augments work done by Oaklawn Physical Rehabilitation at its longtime location in Marshall, Winnie said. Physical-therapy services also are offered at Oaklawn’s sites in Albion and Olivet.

“This is a great addition to the work that Oaklawn has done over the years in providing physical-and occupational therapy services to the region,” said Mitch Zigler, director of Oaklawn Hospital’s physical rehabilitation program.

A demand for greater access to rehabilitation services exists throughout the area, because of sports and age-related health needs, said Winnie, a physical therapist specializing in orthopedics and complete decongestive therapy.

“Physical therapists can help with musculoskeletal injuries, back problems, surgeries, neurological conditions such as strokes or Parkinson’s disease,” she said.

The clinic offers comprehensive outpatient physical therapy services highlighting specialty programs in industrial rehabilitation, cancer care, lymphedema care, vestibular rehabilitation, occupational therapy as well as balance assessment and therapy.

The range of rehabilitation services at Beadle Lake will extend from knee and hip replacement, back and neck pain, shoulder tendonitis and rotator-cuff tears and an array of conditions related to sports-related issues affecting all ages, Winnie said.

Winnie has been trained in various women’s health issues and can address such issues as pregnancy and back pain, sacroiliac joint issues and incontinence training.

“Over the past few years, we’ve expanded some of our programs so we’re able to see more patients with vestibular [balance] problems,” Winnie said. “These issues always have existed but, through continuing education, we have increased people’s awareness of how to get help.”

The development of the new service follows a lengthy construction project in 2012 that doubled the Beadle Lake Road facility’s size and increased its efficiency, she said.

The upgraded facility features four treatment rooms on the expanded facility’s south side, an office, a gymnasium area and an indoor running track, Winnie said.

Winnie, 40, comes from the Detroit area and worked as a physical therapist in Plymouth before coming to Battle Creek and eventually to Marshall. She has been a member of Oaklawn’s staff for 2½ years.

“I’m thrilled” by the chance to extend Oaklawn’s services beyond the Marshall area, Winnie said. “I’ve been a therapist about 14 years and this is something I’m ready for. It’s a great opportunity.”

Winnie graduated from the University of Michigan in 1999 with a master’s degree in physical therapy. She also holds bachelor’s degrees in health science and biology from U-M, and is studying toward her doctorate in physical therapy.

Winnie is a licensed physical therapist in Michigan, and holds certifications as a lymphedema therapist, an orthopedic specialist and in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She lists running, biking, triathlons and coaching soccer among her interests.

“The services we’ve been able to develop at Beadle Lake have been needed to address the demand among that area’s population,” said Mark Montross, Executive Director of the Oaklawn Medical Group. “We’re very pleased that our efforts have been welcomed in that area, and we hope to continue to meet the ongoing needs of patients there.”
