Oaklawn integrates mental health provider Suzanne Kirk into primary care team

MARSHALL, Mich. — Suzanne Kirk, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, has transitioned from inpatient psychiatric care to provide outpatient mental health services within several Oaklawn primary care offices.

Beginning Sept. 22, Kirk began serving adults 18 and older at Oaklawn Medical Group’s Marshall Internal & Family Medicine (720 U.S. Highway 27, Marshall), Albion Family Medicine (302 N. Monroe St, Albion), and Michigan Avenue Primary Care (1174 W Michigan Ave, Marshall).

With over 30 years of experience in family and psychiatric care, including a decade working with inpatient psychiatric patients at Oaklawn, Kirk now focuses on expanding access to outpatient mental health services.

By embedding mental health care in primary care settings, Oaklawn aims to reduce the stigma around seeking mental health treatment and provide more integrated, accessible care.

“Primary care providers are already treating psychiatric concerns. They are really the first line of defense for psychiatric complaints,” Kirk said. “Patients don’t usually have access to mental health providers. They present to their primary care providers first with concerns — anxiety, depression or mood instability. Primary care often is already treating these problems before patients ever see a mental health provider… I am an addition to augment primary care when they feel the need for additional services.”
