On Dec. 18, Dr. Michael Sterrett was named Oaklawn’s 2024 Physician of the Year and Cheryl Lindsey was named Oaklawn’s 2024 Employee of the Year.
The selections were announced by Oaklawn President and CEO Gregg Beeg and other Oaklawn officials during a virtual presentation of service awards, during several dozen additional employees were honored. The complete pre-recorded event may be viewed online at www.oaklawnhospital.org/2024-service-awards.
Sterrett, an otolaryngologist who has been with Oaklawn for more than three decades, said the award was a “total surprise.”
“I figured that since I had just three more months until retirement they were going to name somebody else more deserving,” said Sterrett, who has been nominated many times during his career. “It was an absolute surprise. I am truly honored to receive this recognition. I’ve can honestly say I’ve never imagined staying this long when I first arrived, but the people made it impossible to leave.
“From the patients and their families to the incredible hospital staff and coworkers, they’ve all been the heart of my journey I’ve especially loved working with the children in my practice – their stories, humor and resilience have left a lasting impression. As I head into retirement, I’ll carry countless memories with me, many of which are thanks to them.”
Oaklawn Chief Medical Officer Dr. Summer Liston-Crandall noted that Sterrett’s career “is a testament to excellence and dedication.”
“His contributions extend beyond clinical care as he has served on Oaklawn’s Board of Directors and Medical Executive Committee leaving a lasting impact on the organization,” Liston Crandall. “Dr. Sterrett is a shining example of Oaklawn’s commitment to excellence. Thank you for your years of dedication, compassion and leadership.”
As Physician of the Year, Sterrett received a dozen roses, an engraved plaque, a designated parking spot and $500 to the charity of his choice.
As Employee of the Year, Lindsey received a dozen roses, an engraved clock, Employee of the Year gold pin, $500 and designated parking spot.
Lindsey is manager of Clinical Operations and has served several other roles after arriving at Oaklawn in 1979.
“I was extremely surprised,” noted Lindsey about being selected. “I feel very honored. There are a lot of very valuable employees here.”
Lindsey worked at Oaklawn from 1979-97 and then became a practice administrator for an orthopedic group in Battle Creek for 15 years before re-joining Oaklawn in 2012.
She does a lot of reporting for the executive director to make sure clinics are running smoothly, staffing is appropriate and “everything is in place to take care of patients.”
“I am one that believes that that front line staff has a lot of great things to contribute and there’s a lot of talent there that we need to mentor and help grow.” said Lindsey. “I feel honored to be chosen and to be part of a wonderful group of people here.” ‘
Beeg highlighted Lindsey’s “remarkable journey” with Oaklawn, from her early days in plant operations to her leadership role as manager of Clinical Operations.
“This exemplifies the dedication, versatility and unwavering commitment that we strive for at every level of our organization,” he said. “Cheryl’s ability to recognize and nurture the potential in others stands as a testament to her exceptional leadership. Her willingness to step in wherever needed — whether it’s managing a team or filling in for an absent colleague — demonstrates selflessness and humility that inspires those around her.”
Beeg added that Lindsey’s contributions have gone “far beyond” her managerial expertise.
“She has shaped not only the growth of our operations, but the culture of collaboration and excellence that we are so proud of,” he said. “Cheryl, you are truly deserving of this recognition, and we are incredibly grateful for your ongoing commitment to our mission. Congratulations on this well-earned honor!”
