Family Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Lawrence joins Oaklawn’s Coldwater office

Jennifer Lawrence, FNP-C (Family Nurse Practitioner certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners), will be joining Oaklawn’s Coldwater office beginning in March.

And yes, when many patients first meet her, Lawrence says they do make a comment about the actor Jennifer Lawrence of Hunger Games fame. And no, she doesn’t mind when they do.

The Oaklawn Primary Care office in Coldwater is located at 375 N Willowbrook Rd,
Coldwater, MI 49036. The office can be reached at 517-924-1605 to make an appointment.

Lawrence, who lives in Coldwater and started off as an EMT 20 years ago, has most recently worked in the Emergency Department at Oaklawn and at Grace Health in Battle Creek.

She has certifications in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nurse Core Course and Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course.

During her nurse practitioner training, Lawrence, who received her LPN in 2007 and became an RN in 2008, was able to do one of her clinical rotations in the Coldwater office.

Lawrence and her husband Aaron have five daughters ranging in age from 21 to 9.

“We are always on the move doing something,” said Lawrence. “The ocean/beach is my favorite place. I love to travel and explore as many new places as possible. I learned how to scuba dive three years ago and we have taken a few scuba trips. My favorite trip so far has been to Bonaire.”

“I love learning about underwater photography, and I try to get pictures of all the cool fish that I see. I spend a lot of time camping in the summer with my husband and kids, and hanging out at the pool or campfire is a good way to end the day.”

Lawrence will see patients for all medical needs, from newborn checkups to birth control consults to hypertension, and noted that she has never worked where she lived before and is looking forward to an “interesting change of pace.”

Lawrence said her interest in medicine goes back to when she was a teen and her decision to become an EMT.

“I’ve always been fascinated by medicine,” said Lawrence, who received her master’s degree  and became a Nurse Practitioner last April. “I love educating patients on their health and how small changes can make big impacts. I like the cause-and-effect relationship in most body systems and how it affects the whole person.

“My long-term goal/interest in medicine (once my kids are grown) is to be able to travel abroad and do programs like Doctors Without Borders where I can work with those who have little access to healthcare.”

Lawrence added that she is a “big advocate” for women’s health and many of the areas served frequently by groups like Doctors Without Borders lack even basic access to that type of care.

“I have done a few mission trips in the past and they are very rewarding and a good reminder of how good our healthcare system is,” she said. “I am also very interested in nutrition/fitness and enjoy educating patients on how big of an impact our nutrition and exercise habits have on our health beyond just weight management.”

Lawrence, who has worked in the Emergency Department since March 2017, said working for Oaklawn has always been a great experience.

“Being a smaller hospital system has allowed me to get to know so many members of the team, and many are like a second family to me,” she said. “I have made a lot of great friends who made work enjoyable versus a task to complete. I got to learn a lot from some great people, and I always knew I was supported when I needed it. I am looking forward to being able to work in the town where I live and support my community through Oaklawn.”
