Mako SmartRobotics™ for Total and Partial Knee Replacement

We understand how important it is to know what to expect from your joint replacement experience. As you review this information, please reach out to our team if you have any questions. We are here to support you throughout the process.

Every patient is unique, and knee pain can occur for many different reasons. Speaking with your care team about the cause of your discomfort is essential to understanding the treatment options available to you. Pain related to arthritis or joint degeneration may be constant or intermittent, triggered by movement or rest, and may affect one area or multiple parts of the knee.

Many patients begin with medication, physical therapy, or other conservative treatments to manage knee pain. If these approaches do not provide sufficient relief, you may be a candidate for total or partial knee replacement using Mako SmartRobotics™, an advanced technology designed to support precision and personalization during surgery.

How Mako SmartRobotics™ Works

Mako SmartRobotics™ is an innovative solution for individuals experiencing knee pain caused by arthritis. The system uses three dimensional CT based planning software that allows your surgeon to better understand your unique anatomy and create a personalized surgical plan. A detailed 3D model of your joint is used to guide preparation and assist during your total or partial knee replacement procedure.

During surgery, your surgeon follows this customized plan while preparing the bone for placement of the Triathlon™ total or partial knee implant. Backed by more than a decade of clinical history, Triathlon™ knee replacements are designed differently from traditional implants. They are engineered to work with the body to promote natural like motion and improved joint function.

The surgeon guides the Mako robotic arm within a predefined surgical area, and AccuStop™ technology helps maintain precision by keeping movement within the planned boundaries established during the personalized preoperative plan. By providing this level of guidance, AccuStop™ supports accurate bone preparation aligned with the surgical plan, helping protect healthy bone and preserve surrounding soft tissue.

It is important to understand that the procedure is performed entirely by an orthopedic surgeon, who controls and directs the robotic arm throughout surgery to position the implant within the knee joint. Mako SmartRobotics™ does not perform surgery, make independent decisions, or move without the surgeon’s guidance. The system also allows the surgeon to make adjustments to the surgical plan during the procedure if needed, ensuring care remains tailored to the patient’s needs.
