It is recommended that women who are 50 to 74 years old and are at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. Women who are 40 to 49 years old should talk to their doctor or other health care provider about when to start and how often to get a mammogram.
The GE Senograph Pristina is a 2D and 3D (Tomosynthesis) mammography machine. The 3D imaging increases technologist’s accuracy and provides more accurate imaging for the Radiologist, WITHOUT increased radiation exposure to the patient. When having a 3D image on this machine, it gives the radiologist the 3D imaging plus a 2D synthesized image compiled from the 3D images.
2D imaging is what has always been done in the past. Oaklawn has had the ability to do 3D imaging since 2015. The 3D imaging is recommended by radiologists for all breast types. It reduces the “overlap” of structures in the breast. This results in less patient callback, reduced anxiety and improved breast cancer detection.
