Oaklawn is pleased to announce that Karina Torres, MD, has joined Marshall Internal and Family Medicine, located at 720 US Hwy 27. The office can be reached by calling 269-781-6600.
Torres recently completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Detroit Medical Center Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce, Mich.. She earned her medical degree in 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, an experience that gave her the unique opportunity to complete clinical rotations in diverse settings including Puerto Rico, Miami, Fla. Augusta, Ga. Chicago and Lewiston, Maine.
“During that time, I had to adapt quickly and learn from a wide range of health systems,” said Torres. “It gave me a strong foundation and reinforced my commitment to caring for patients from all walks of life.”
A first-generation physician, Torres was drawn to medicine at an early age.
“Growing up with chronic medical conditions, I saw firsthand the impact that compassionate physicians can have,” she said. “I always loved science, but it was those early experiences as a patient that made me want to dedicate my life to helping others. Internal medicine allows me to care for the whole person, and that’s what I find most rewarding.”
Torres said she is excited to transition from a hospitalist-focused residency into a role where she can develop long-term relationships with her patients.
“In the hospital, you often only see patients at their sickest but don’t get to follow up with them afterwards,” she explained. “I’m really looking forward to being in the clinic, following my patients over time, and celebrating their progress alongside them.”
Torres and her husband, who is training in neonatology, are excited to make West Michigan their home and they said they are looking forward look forward to exploring the region, especially Lake Michigan.
Torres added that she enjoys spending time with her husband and their dogs, trying new restaurants and going to the movies.
“Marshall has been such a heartwarming and welcoming community already,” she said. “I’m grateful to be here, and I look forward to caring for the people of this community for years to come.”
