Eric Pearson, DO, specializing in family medicine and obstetrics, has joined Oaklawn Medical Group – Marshall Primary Care, located at 215 E. Mansion St., Ste #1E, in Marshall. The office can be reached at 269-781-3938.
Originally from the Flint area, Pearson most recently worked in St. Joseph where he completed his family medicine residency.
“My wife and I were looking for places that would allow me to do family medicine with obstetrics,” said Pearson. “We looked around Iowa, and the only place in Michigan that I could find was in Escanaba, all of which weretoo far from home. While I was touring different facilities, I got a call from Oaklawn. I didn’t even know they existed until I got that call, but because it was in Southwest Michigan, we knew we were going to stick around.”
Pearson said he initially wanted to go into emergency medicine before choosing family medicine and obstetrics.
“But when I experienced it as a medical student, it didn’t really catch my interest,” he said. “My next rotation right after that was obstetrics, and I just really fell in love with the idea of having some sort of triage and urgent care aspect to it. You still get the office visits and get to know the patient, and it was with all of that that I realized family medicine was really what called me because I got to do all of those things and participate in deliveries as well.”
Pearson shared that it was because of his neighbor while he was in high school that helped him choose a path in medicine.
“It goes back to a woman named Beni who had Parkinson’s, and I would help her around the house,” he said. “The disease really limited her mobility. I’d help her get out of bed, get back into bed, use the bathroom, etc. And in school, I had an AP Biology teacher, Mr. Tippett, who really inspired me to pursue a degree in biomedical science, and that was what was needed to have a career in the medical field.”
Pearson shared what he likes most about family medicine and obstetrics.
“Seeing families is part of that; obstetrics lends itself to seeing moms and their babies, and as those kids grow up, I get the whole package of healthcare. Then, as people age, we start seeing more geriatric patients and you get all the different facets of people coming through in different stages of life. Forming relationships with patients, especially being in a small town like Marshall, where you really get to know people, is a huge part of why I liked medicine to begin with.”
Among his interests outside the office, Pearson noted that he and his wife like mountain biking and they also used to breed Golden Retrievers.
“Since we used to live near a lake, we would go kayaking and mountain biking,” he said. “We really enjoy outdoor activities. My wife loves gardening as well and is great at doing projects around the house.I tend to be more of the tech person.”
Living in Marshall and getting to know the town and Oaklawn “has been great,” said Pearson.
“It’s been wonderful getting to meet people in the Marshall community,” he said. “We love how close we live to downtown, and we walk everywhere. It’s a great place to be.”
