Angela Fleet, MSN, RN, FNP-C, has joined Oaklawn Express Care and will work out of the Marshall location but will also see patients in Albion and Battle Creek.
Fleet was born in Marshall and most of her family is from the area, but she left Marshall when she was in first grade moving to Spring Arbor and Jackson area through high school.
She attended the University of Detroit Mercy where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Leadership in 2019 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 2022.
Fleet said she decided to get into nursing after a couple of family members died suddenly.
“When I was in high school, I had a few family members who died from a stroke and two from a widowmaker heart attack,” she said. “I was curious why this happened. It was so sudden and out of the blue.”
Fleet sees a wide range of patients from babies to the elderly and offers comprehensive to focused physical exams, diagnostic testing, treatment and management of acute conditions and patient education.
“Since I’ve been an NP, I’ve focused on urgent care and as an RN, I worked in emergency medicine,” she said. “One of the aspects I enjoy about the job is in the urgent care setting, you’re always seeing something different and even though you don’t see the same patients all the time there are some that do come back to you because they like the rapport with you. So, it’s interesting to see them even if it’s in a quick-care setting. And for some people, they don’t have primary care, so they use urgent care for limited primary care needs, and you get to know some people and their families. That is one of the great things about working for Oaklawn now, is that I have more resources available and can help patients establish a primary care provider to ensure their health care needs are being met.”
Moving back to Marshall is something Fleet and her husband Ian, who is an industrial maintenance technician, were excited to do.
“We were looking for a slower pace after living in Detroit and the Metro area for a few years,” she said. “We wanted a family (the couple has an almost 2-year-old daughter) and just to be around family.”
With spring around the corner, Fleet said she is looking forward to getting back outdoors.
“I love kayaking and being out on the water,” she said. “We have family with water property, so we spend a lot of time with them just enjoying the sunshine and the water.”
Fleet said her first weeks at Oaklawn have been going “very well.”
“It’s been a bit of a culture shock, but in a good way compared to where I was coming from,” she said. ”It’s a completely different culture here. It’s provider-friendly and I feel like our input matters. Everyone I have met has been genuinely friendly and happy that I’m going to be a part of their team.”
