Welcome to South Michigan Ophthalmology (SMO). Our goal is to provide you with complete, comprehensive eye care close to home. From routine eye exams and diagnostic testing to in-office laser surgery, our expert physicians will provide state-of-the-art medical treatment for you and your family right here, close to home. These are some of the more common services we provide either in-office or at the hospital (outpatient):

General Services

  • Adult and Pediatric exams
  • Routine eye exams for glasses and contact lenses
  • Drivers license exams
  • Vision exams for failed school screenings
  • Full service optical shop
  • In-house lens lab available to make certain types of glasses

Medical Services

  • Cataract evaluations
  • Secondary cataract evaluations
  • Diabetic exams
  • Macular degeneration exams
  • Dry eye exams
  • Disability exams for the Social Security Administration
  • Exams to monitor vision changes due to the use of certain medications (plaquenil, methotrexate, etc)
  • Exams for corneal disease
  • Exams under anesthesia for patients as required
  • In-house retina specialist every other week
  • In-house oculoplastics every other week
  • Avastin injections

Surgical Services

  • Outpatient cataract surgery at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall and Brookside Surgery Center in Battle Creek
  • Limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) to reduce corneal astigmatism
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasy (SLT) for glaucoma
  • Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) for glaucoma
  • Eyelid surgery for droopy lids and/or skin
  • Diabetic laser
  • YAG laser for secondary cataracts
  • Lesion removal from the eye or eyelids

Diagnostic Testing

  • Humphrey Visual Field testing to determine the scope and progression of vision loss
  • Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) for measuring optic nerve and retinal thickness
  • Corneal Topography to monitor corneal changes
  • Internal and external photography of the eyes to document pathology
  • Fluorescein Angiography to determine blood flow through the eye
  • B-scan Ultrasound to determine pathology if there is no view into the eye
  • Diopsys NOVA Vision Testing to objectively measure the function of the entire visual pathway from the eyes to the visual cortex using electrophysiology

Emergency Services

No matter what time it is, SMO is always ready to take care of your eye emergencies – 24/7.  Walk-ins for eye emergencies and injuries are always welcome during normal business hours and will be worked into our schedule.  If you have an eye emergency after hours, our doctor-on-call is just a phone call away.

**Please note that our phone systems are turned off for lunch Monday-Friday from 11:30am-1:00pm.  Should you have an issue arise during that time, please call back after 1:00pm or go immediately to the nearest emergency room (if you’re not sure you can wait).


Monday – Friday: 8:00am – 4:30pm*
Saturdays: 9:00am – 1:00pm (1st and 3rd of the month – may be subject to change)**
Sundays: Closed
