Oaklawn Auxiliary’s Bunco Night returns April 23

Join and support The Oaklawn Auxiliary for a fun night of Bunco on April 23 from 7-9:30 p.m. in the main dining area at Cornwell’s Turkeyville, located on N Drive, a mile west of I-69.

The night will feature fun games of bunco, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and bunco bags for winners. Food and drink will be available for purchase from Cornwell’s.

The cost of admission is $10 at the door and will go to support The Oaklawn Auxiliary.

Proceeds go to the Auxiliary who will make a gift to Oaklawn as well as provide scholarships to those pursuing a career in the medical field.

Bunco is a dice game with players divided into groups of four comprising two-person teams trying to score points while taking turns rolling three dice in a series of six rounds.

“If someone hasn’t played Bunco before, it’s quite easy to catch on,” said Bobbi Machata, an Auxiliary member since 1969. “And there will be people there to help instruct them.”

Machata added that Bunco Night has always been a popular event.

“We are hoping for a good turnout,” she said. “In the past we held the event at the Fredonia Township Hall and had as many as 100 people play.”

Bunco Night used to be held twice a year, in the fall and spring, but has not been held since fall 2019 because of the COVID pandemic.

The Auxiliary, which has about 130 members, operates the Oaklawn Gift Shop, provides greeters at the information desk, holds a blood drive and makes stuffed animal toys for children.

“You don’t have to pay dues to join the Auxiliary and we can always use more volunteers,” said Machata.

The Auxiliary’s new co-chairs are Jodi Lubis and Nancy Tackett.

Gloria Dempsey, who serves as the treasurer for the Auxiliary, says it will be nice to hold the event again after such a long absence.

“Everybody has such a good time,” said Dempsey. “I’ve had a few people asking when we would be having the Bunco Night again. I hope everybody loves it.”

Added Machata: “We’ve been inactive for so long, it’s nice to be up and running again,”
