Pathology is a brand of medical science concerned with examination of bodily tissues, organs and fluids to diagnose disease. A pathologist is a physician who diagnoses disease based on examination of tissue or organs removed from the body (biopsy) They also diagnose through examination of bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, fluid from the abdomen, spinal cord, semen and fluid from heart or lungs.
Pathologists work with other physicians and specialists to identify a wide range of cancers by using a microscope to determine if the specimen is cancerous or non-cancerous. They can then assist is decision making regarding the best course of treatment.
A doctor who practices general pathology is an expert in all aspects of laboratory interpretations as it relates to blood, organs and tissue and bodily fluids.
