Nurse Practitioners

Overview

Nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses who provide care to all ages, from newborn to the elderly.  Due to their advanced experience, nurse practitioners perform functions beyond a registered nurse, such as prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and providing diagnoses for acute and chronic conditions.

Within Oaklawn, nurse practitioners are a valuable component of our medical team, working in both outpatient clinics and in the hospital setting.  They perform both general and focused physical exams, as well as diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses.  Nurse practitioners provide counseling and education to patients and families about healthy lifestyle options, wellness and disease prevention.

As the number of primary care physicians decrease and demand is on the rise (due to an aging population), the services of nurse practitioners is both highly sought and highly valued.  Ultimately what sets a nurse practitioner apart from a primary care physician is their holistic, “big picture” approach.  Nurse practitioners provide an emphasis on wellness rather than focusing on the treatment of one injury or illness.
