The Oaklawn Community Garden formed as we at the Oaklawn Life Improvement Center were brainstorming ways to bring healthy eating to the forefront of the community. We’ve used it to not only to stress to people the importance of fruits and vegetables in their daily diet, but as a springboard into awareness of self-grow options and the exercise that this can provide.
We currently have 48 garden beds in the Oaklawn Community Garden. They are raised bed gardens that each measure 16ft x 4ft.. The whole garden is fenced to prevent animals from eating produce. The property on which the garden sits is owned by Oaklawn Hospital and is located on 15 mile road on the west of Marshall (13697 15 Mile Rd). Of the garden beds, many are leased out to community members for $55 per year. Those that are not leased are used to teach Youth Gardening Classes, Senior Gardening Classes, and to grow fresh produce for local food pantries. The Garden Director does watering every weekday morning as needed.
The Youth Gardening Classes are for kids aged from 5-10. The children are involved in every step from planting to harvesting and split all of our produce grown each week to take home with them. The cost for the Youth Gardening Class is $15 for the whole season and includes a T-shirt.
If you have any questions regarding the Oaklawn Community Garden or any of the classes, contact The Garden Director, Jonah Curtis, at (269) 781-7585.
