Oaklawn among 18 Michigan hospitals to receive highest federal ranking

MARSHALL – Oaklawn is one of 18 hospitals and health systems in Michigan and 429 such institutions nationwide to earn five stars – the highest possible – in the latest ranking from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

“In addition to Oaklawn being rated in the top 13.9 percent of hospitals on a national basis for quality, we were one of 18 hospitals in the state of Michigan to earn a ‘five  star’ rating out of 144 total hospitals, putting us in the top 12.5 percent of Michigan hospitals for quality,” Oaklawn President and CEO Gregg Beeg said in a statement to employees.

Oaklawn was the only hospital in Calhoun County to be singled out for the honor, according to information released by the CMS. A full list of recognized hospitals may be viewed online at www.beckershospitalreview.com.

“I am so proud of all of you for your contributions during this extremely challenging COVID-19 pandemic period as we never wavered from continuing to deliver the world-class quality of care we are known for to our community members,” Beeg told employees.

This is the third year in a row that Oaklawn has received the distinction, which was first awarded to Oaklawn in 2016 when the federal agency initiated the star-rating system.

Under the ranking system, the single composite grade reflects a broad range of measures of quality in five categories – patient experience, readmission rates, safety of care, mortality and timely and effective care.

The new ranking is the second star-ratings update since January 2020, showing results for 3,093 hospitals and health systems nationwide.

Of those, 429 received a five-star rating, 890 received a four-star rating, 890 received a three-star rating, 692 received a two-star rating and 192 received a one-star rating. Several thousand U.S. hospitals were examined in all, and many did not receive star ratings.

Hospitals report data to the agency through the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program, Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting Program, Hospital Readmission Reduction Program, Hospital-Acquired Condition (Reduction Program and Hospital Value-Based Purchasing  Program.

The public may view overall hospital ratings at Medicare’s Hospital Compare website, found at www.medicare.gov/care-compare/. Additional information also may be obtained by visiting the CMS website at www.cms.gov and searching for “star ratings.”

“Receiving this ranking is a validation of our work over a long period of time,” Beeg said. “It’s very gratifying that those efforts are noticed in this way, because every day we do whatever is necessary to make things even better.”
