Family nurse practitioner Rebecca Weyer joins Oaklawn’s express-care team

BATTLE CREEK – New challenges and a new environment are in store for Rebecca Weyer as she shifts her career to focus on medical patients from a broader region than ever before.

A registered nurse for two decades, Weyer has spent the past 15 years in various nursing capacities at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Now, as a family nurse practitioner in service for the past two years, Weyer is poised to join Oaklawn’s express-care team in Battle Creek.

Weyer will be based primarily at Oaklawn Express Care – Beckley Road, which is to open June 1 in Suite B at 5352 Beckley Road, Battle Creek. The office may be contacted at (269) 558-0714. Weyer also will see patients at Oaklawn Express Care – Albion and Oaklawn After Hours Express in Marshall.

The former Rebecca Blllings was born in Grand Rapids and raised in the Detroit-area community of Northville. However, she counts Marshall as home because her family moved there when she was 12 years old.

Weyer traces her medical career to her mother’s struggle with advanced multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease that rendered her wheelchair-bound.

“I’ve been a caretaker all my life,” Weyer said. “I wanted to extend that to the community, so this led me step by step to a nursing career.”

Weyer’s aptitude for such scientific subjects as anatomy and physiology at Marshall High School also contributed to that professional path.

“When I was 18, I started working at an assisted-living home in Marshall and really fell in love with caring for the elderly,” she said. “I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in nursing.”

Weyer graduated in 2003 from Kellogg Community College with an associate’s degree in nursing. After working for five years as a registered nurse at an inpatient oncology/urology unit in Rhode Island, Weyer returned to Michigan to care for her mother. She joined Oaklawn in 2008, and since then has held the positions of medical-surgical charge nurse, float nurse and house supervisor.

During that time, Weyer enrolled at Spring Arbor University and graduated summa cum laude in 2013 with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. In 2021, Weyer was awarded a master’s degree in nursing from the university’s family nurse practitioner program.

Today, Weyer is an internal medicine hospitalist provider associated with Scottsdale, Arizona-based Apogee Medical Group, and helps to mentor members of the nursing staff. In addition to certifications in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support, Weyer has been certified as a trauma nurse.

Weyer, who has a young son, lives with her family in Marshall, where she’s a member of a book club and enjoys hosting parties.

“I love to cook and am kind of a foodie, especially Italian food,” she said, adding that she enjoys traveling in northern Michigan and its lakeshores.

Weyer’s latest role at Oaklawn allows her to continue to work with staff whom she has known for many years.

“Everybody supports each other here. I have a lot of newer nurses on my shift, and I encourage them to go back to school and continue their education,” she said.

“Oaklawn truly offers a sense of family,” she said. “It’s a small organization, comparatively speaking, and it’s independently owned. Because people aren’t just a number there, Oaklawn provides very personalized care.”
